On Monday, January 23, Governor DeSantis signed a death warrant for Donald David Dillbeck. Dillbeck was convicted of fatally stabbing Faye Vann in Tallahassee in 1990 after escaping from custody while serving a life sentence for killing a Lee County deputy. Dillbeck is scheduled to be executed on February 23 at 6:00 p.m. If carried out, it would be Florida’s first execution since June 2019.
Dillbeck’s childhood was marked with severe trauma and physical and sexual abuse, including extreme prenatal exposure to alcohol, leading to developmental disabilities from birth. Four members of his jury voted to spare his life. He has spent more than three decades on Florida’s death row without incident. Taking Mr. Dillbeck's life is unnecessary to keep society safe and perpetuates the cycle of violence.
Be on the lookout for an FLCAN action alert requesting Gov. DeSantis to spare Mr. Dillbeck’s life.
